Convert storage groups to cascaded

Storage groups are a collection of devices that are stored on the storage system. An application, a server, or a collection of servers use them.

About this task

This procedure explains how to nondisruptively convert a stand-alone storage group to a cascaded storage group. Once completed, the original storage group serves as the parent to a new child storage group.

In eNAS operating environments, you can also perform this operation from Storage Groups for File page (System > System Dashboard > File Dashboard > File Storage Groups).

Before you begin:

  • You must have Administrator or StorageAdmin permission.

To convert storage groups:

Steps

  1. Select the storage system.
  2. Select Storage > Storage Groups.
  3. Select the storage group, click An icon showing three dots arranged in a vertical row, signifying a menu with more options, and click SG Maintenance > Convert to Cascaded.
  4. Type a new name over the system-suggested child storage group name.
Storage group names must be unique from other storage groups on the system and cannot exceed 64 characters. Only alphanumeric characters, underscores ( _ ), and (-) are allowed. Storage group names are case-insensitive.
  5. For storage groups where the host I/0 limits have already been set (see Host I/O limits dialog box), click the Set on Parent radio button (the default) to set the host I/O limits for the parent storage group or click the Set on Child radio button to set the host I/O limits for the child storage group.
  6. Do one of the following:
    • Click Run Now to perform the operation now.
    • Expand Run Now and click Add to Job List to add this task to the job list, from which you can schedule or run the task at your convenience. For more information, see Schedule jobs and Preview jobs.
